Out of Network Insurance Benefits
For those who wish to use health insurance to pay for therapy, I can provide you with an appropriate diagnosis* and a receipt of payment (payment is due in full at the end of each session) which you can use to apply for Out of Network insurance benefits. Check with your health plan about Out of Network benefits and the whether they will pay for Couples Counseling. Many insurance companies will pay for Individual counseling with the partner present but not strictly speaking for marital/couples counseling.
High Deductible? Large Co-Pays?
Want Increased Privacy and Confidentiality?
Many people, not only because of high deductibles and co-pays, but desiring the highest level of confidentiality possible, choose to pay out of pocket for therapy.
*Using health insurance requires the therapist to make a diagnosis of mental illness in one of the partners that then becomes part of their medical record. I choose not to be an in-network provider for health insurance companies to avoid framing therapy around a mental illness whenever possible. Though it is possible to do couples therapy in this manner, it can have the unintended effect of pathologizing one partner and locating the problem inside their “Mental Health Symptoms.” Having relationship or marriage difficulties is not a mental illness and it’s doubtful that it can be treated as such. Hence many health insurance companies do not pay for marital or relationship therapy anyway. I prefer to diagnose and treat the pattern of interaction between partners which locates the difficulties not in one partner but in the “dance” between them. I am happy to discuss any of your questions or concerns about these matters — just send me an email or give me a call.
